Tombstone Tuesday ~ My Grand Uncle HITCHINGS, buried in Beverly, Massachusetts

This tombstone was photographed at the Central Cemetery in Beverly, Massachusetts.  I was there with Vincent and Mom, and we were overwhelmed with the size of this urban cemetery.  Usually I wander through small 18th and 19th century burial grounds, and usually find my family members without a map or assistance from a cemetery maintenance office. Not in this case.  We were searching for some direct ancestors, and never found them, but we did find this one. Even Mom was surprised, because this is her Uncle Hollis Hitchings.  In the meantime, the Beverly cemetery department has sent me information to help find all the ancestors we missed that day last summer.

HITCHINGS

HOLLIS HITCHINGS
1903 - 1983
MARGUERITE HIS WIFE
1910 - 1967

Hollis Hitchings, son of Arthur Treadwell Hitchings and Florence Etta Hoogerzeil, was born 23 January 1903 in Beverly, Massachusetts; married on 10 May 1931 in Plaistown, New Hampshire or Georgetown, Massachusetts (it was recorded in both places) to Marguerite Evelyn Seaver, daughter of Ralph Waldo West and Edna Collins Seaver.  She was born 25 July 1910 in Georgetown, Massachusetts and died in July 1967 in Beverly, Massachusetts. She is a distant cousin to blogger Randy Seaver, since they are both descendants of the immigrant ancestors Robert Seaver and Elizabeth Ballard, who arrived in Boston, Massachusetts in 1634.

Hollis was my grandmother's, Gertrude Matilda (Hitchings) Allen, brother.  He was one of 8 children.  Uncle Hollis and Aunt Marguerite had eleven children!

In this photo of the Hitchings family, my grandmother is the baby on my great grandmother's lap.  Hollis is the little boy with the toy dog in his lap.  This photo was taken around 1905, the year my grandmother was born, and in those days little boys wore dresses until they were "breeched".  Notice that my grand uncle Arthur Hitchings, who was born in 1897, is not wearing a dress.
